Short description of the presentation
The intended starting point of the presentation during Art Rotterdam is the monumental painting of Diana Roig; ‘Starry Night /or the painting formerly known as Starry Night suddenly becoming a statement for challenging male dominance in the art world.’
Made during her residency at the Vincent van GoghHuis in Zundert, Diana Roig's “Starry Night” is a non literal translation of van Gogh’s masterpiece. An abstract interpretation drenched with intensity, rough gestures and dripping accents. Her version of this world famous painting is 4 x 2 meters, deliberately bigger then the original painting. Making a firm statement regarding female empowerment amongst painters and a strong declaration of her overall ambition from the start.
The work of Ulla-Stina Wikander compliments the presentation with her feminist approach by working with embroidery, a typical female craft. She recycles found embroidery and incorporates this craft onto household objects reminiscent of a nostalgic housewife lifestyle sometimes with strong contradictions of machinery in embroidery drag.
