Cokkie Snoei heeft C.A. Wertheim uitgenodigd om tijdens Poetry International in haar galerie haar werk te presenteren. C. A. Wertheim maakt al decennia lang zelfportretten van allerlei soorten materialen in de meest uiteenlopende stijlen.
Poetry International wordt dit jaar in Rotterdam gehouden van 30 mei tot 3 juni. Het festival heeft als thema ‘IK!’. Op 1 juni vindt de zesde editie van de Language & Art Gallery tour plaats. Verschillende dichters weaaronder Christopher Blok bij Cokkie Snoei - dragen dan uit hun werk voor in de deelnemende galeries.
Het thema ‘IK!’ met hoofdletters en een uitroepteken doet denken aan driftig tikkende, zichzelf op de borst kloppende, ikken, die hun ondoordachte, vaak kwetsende, meningen via sociale media spuien, met als meest prominente en afschrikwekkende voorbeeld de nieuwe Amerikaanse president.
IK! lijkt te roepen; ikke, ikke, ikke en de rest kan stikken.
Toen Wertheim gevraagd werd voor deze expositie, reageerde zij met; ik? Dat ‘ik?’, met kleine letters en een vraagteken, is dan ook de titel van haar tentoonstelling geworden.
Want wie ben je nu eigenlijk? Er hebben nog nooit zoveel mensen op aarde geleefd. Tijdens Wertheim's ‘leeftijd’ is de wereldbevolking meer dan verdubbeld. Op internet zijn tellers te vinden die de toename ‘real time’ nauwkeurig bijhouden. De snelheid waarmee dat gaat is duizelingwekkend; en net als bij een op hol slaande gas- en elektriciteitsmeter tijdens een strenge winter vrees je voor de rekening.
Misschien is de nadruk op het ik, met of zonder uitroep- of vraagteken wel logisch; een soort ‘ik ben er ook nog’, als zelfbescherming; een reddingsboei, om niet te verdrinken in deze mensenzee.
De zelfportretten die in de tentoonstelling te zien zijn, kruipen onder de huid van de kijker, ze gaan over ziekte, vergankelijkheid, onzekerheid en angst, maar Wertheim heeft ze altijd met humor en zelfrelativering vormgegeven.
In ‘Een zee van tijd’, een werk van wel 230 x 405 cm, komt de zee in een andere vorm terug. Het silhouet van de kunstenaar staat tegenover honderden, glinsterende medicijnenstrips, terwijl meeuwen om haar hoofd cirkelen, je hoort ze bijna krijsen.
Deze lege strips werden verzameld door familie en vrienden, maar ook ter beschikking gesteld door een farmaceutisch bedrijf dat medicijnen levert aan zorginstellingen in de regio Amsterdam.
C.A. Wertheim is invited to present her work at Cokkie Snoei during Poetry International. For more than three decades, the Dutch artist has been producing self-portraits brought about with a variety of styles and materials.
Poetry International will be held in Rotterdam from May 30th to June 3rd. 'IK!' is the theme of the festival, meaning ‘I!’.
On May 28th, the sixth edition of the Language & Art Gallery tour will take place. Different poets will then partake in the galleries that are participating.
The festival theme ‘IK!’, in capital letters and followed by an exclamation mark, reminds us of people who always point towards themselves, and choose to share their unthoughtful and sometimes hurtful views through social media, as a prominent and frightening example is the new president of the US.
IK! Seems to cry out loud: ‘Ikke, ikke, ikke en de rest kan stikken!’ which means ‘Me, me, me and the rest can choke!’
When Wertheim was invited to the ‘IK?’ theme festival, her response was: ik?
Afterwards, 'ik?', in lowercase letters and a question mark, became the title of her exhibition.
After all, who are you actually? There have never been so many people living on Earth. During Wertheim’s ‘lifetime’, the world's population has more than doubled with a speed that gives a subtle feeling of dizziness. In the end, just like with gas and electricity during the coldest of winters, you fear the bill.
Perhaps the emphasis on it, with or without exclamation or question mark, is logical. A kind of response that says 'I'm there too' as self-defense; a life buoy for not drowning in this human sea.
The self-portraits shown in the exhibition creep under the eyes of the viewer. They concern diseases; impermanence of our beings, insecurity and fear, but Wertheim has always shaped them with humor and self-reliance.
In ‘Een zee van tijd’ ('A Sea of Time'), a work of 230 x 405 cm, the sea comes back in a different shape. The artist's silhouette stands opposite hundreds of glittering medicine strips, while seagulls surround her head and you can almost hear them screaming.
These medicine strips were collected by family and friends, but also made available by a pharmaceutical company providing medicine to care institutions in the Amsterdam region.
