In de tentoonstelling ‘Traces' zien we hoe negen kunstenaars verschillende sporen traceren en verbeelden.
William Christenberry en Dirk Kome fotograferen hun geboortegrond. Pieter Hugo legt vrienden en familie vast in Zuid-Afrika. Claudy Jongstra's wandkleden en Christien Meindertsma's theedoeken tonen de sporen van ons cultureel erfgoed. Herlinde Koelbl portretteerde Angela Merkel jarenlang en onderzocht of haar macht van invloed is op haar fysieke verschijning. Op Matthias Schaufler's schilderijen zie je de tastbare sporen van de lichamelijke inspanningen van de schilder en Isabella Werkhoven's schilderijen blijven nog lang door je hoofd spoken. In het binnenste van de ‘klankkasten' van Eveline Visser's ‘minivleugels' ontvouwt zich een wereld die de sporen van de tijd met zich meedragen. Staan de ‘mini wings' gedurende de tentoonstelling verstild in de ruimte; tijdens de Museumnacht op 8 maart, zal daadwerkelijk op de twee keyboards worden gespeeld. Kees Wieringa zal dan - samen met een andere pianist - de ‘Canto Ostinato' van Simeon ten Holt ten gehore brengen.
Everyone wants to leave a trace of his or her existence behind. For it is these traces, your own personal imprint, that reveal your story, even after you are gone. Nonetheless time will slowly erode these traces over the years.
The group exhibition ‘Traces', co-curated by Dirk Kome and Cokkie Snoei, shows the imprint and vision of nine different artists as they explore and visualise their own traces.
William Christenberry and Dirk Kome present photographs of their homeland. Pieter Hugo documents his closest family and friends in South Africa. Claudy Jongstra's tapestries and Christien Meindertsma's tea towels show the traces of our cultural heritage. Herlinde Koelbl has made portraits of Angela Merkel over the course of many years, exploring whether political power has left its traces on her visual appearance. Matthias Schaufler's paintings show clear traces of the artist's physical exertion, and Isabella Werkhoven's paintings continue to linger on like ghosts in the mind.
At the centre of Eveline Visser's musical ‘Mini Wings' you will find a world that carries the traces of time within itself. If these resonant ‘Mini Wings' are dormant during the exhibition, then they will surely come to life on Rotterdam Museum Night on 8 March. On this evening Cokkie Snoei will present a unique live performance by Kees Wieringa, accompanied by a fellow pianist, with their interpretation of the ‘Canto Ostinato' played on the two keyboards that are part of the Mini Wings.
