Elza Jo laat ons haar laatste stop motion film zien. ‘Matadora' wordt gepresenteerd samen met een aantal foto's en foto collages.

In Matadora confronteert Elza Jo ons met een aantal aspecten van het stierengevecht. Met de wreedheid, de traditie, maar ook met de schoonheid ervan. Sierlijk danst ze in haar prachtig, strakke stierenvechters kostuum; ze is het toonbeeld van jeugd en menselijke kracht. Ze durft het op te nemen tegen de zwarte stier, is uitdager van de dood.

Hoewel wat Elza Jo betreft de wreedheid zwaar genoeg telt om het stierengevecht te laten stoppen, schuilt er ook schoonheid in het dilemma van het stierengevecht. En zonder dilemma's is er geen schoonheid, geen leven en geen liefde. Elza Jo is zowel de matadora als de stier. De gevechten voert ze met zichzelf.

Elza Jo kiest voor het medium film om een verhaal te kunnen vertellen. Film komt en gaat; staat niet stil. De hoeveelheid beelden op een film is duizelingwekkend. Elza Jo gaat een competitie aan met het materiaal. Ze levert ons een enorme hoeveelheid, intuïtieve beelden aan.

Uitgangspunt is steeds een gefotografeerd zwart-wit zelfportret; een weerspiegeling van de werkelijkheid die ze door middel van haar collage materialen in een geconstrueerde, betoverende wereld kan transformeren.

Elza Jo (1981, Amsterdam) heeft succesvolle fotoseries in opdracht geproduceerd voor onder andere DAZED KR, NYLON MX, TANK, Vice en de Volkskrant. Voor De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig en Sef maakte ze videoclips.

Elza Jo presents her latest stop motion film. 'Matadora' will be presented together with a number of photos and photo collages.

In ‘Matadora' Elza Jo confronts us with several aspects of bullfighting. With the cruelty and tradition, but also with its beauty. Gracefully she dances in her beautiful, tight bullfighter's costume; she is the epitome of youth and human strength. She dares to battle the black bull, she is the challenger of death.

Even though to Elza Jo the cruelty is grave enough to put an end to bullfighting, one can also find beauty in the dilemma of the fight. And without dilemmas, there is no beauty, no life and no love. Elza Jo is both matadora and bull. She carries the battles with herself.

Elza Jo chose the medium of film to be able to tell a story. The moving image comes and goes, it does not stand still. The amount of images in a film is dizzying. Elza Jo enters in a competition with the material. She gives us a huge amount of intuitive images.

The starting point is always a photographed black and white self-portrait, a reflection of the reality that she transforms through her collage materials in a constructed, enchanted world.
